Wim Mertens
(Neerpelt, 14 maggio 1953) è un compositore, pianista, chitarrista musicologo e controtenore belga. Autore di musica contemporanea, legato alle correnti meno sperimentali del minimalismo ed al cross-over, in Italia raggiunse una discreta popolarità nella seconda metà degli anni ‘80 quando una sua composizione, Struggle for Pleasure, venne utilizzata come colonna sonora di una pubblicità. La stessa opera fu utilizzata per lo stesso scopo anche in altri paesi del mondo. Mertens studiò Scienze politiche e sociali all’Università di Leuven (laureandosi nel 1975) e musicologia all’Università di Gent; ha anche studiato teoria della musica e pianoforte nei Reali Conservatori di Gent e Bruxelles. Iniziò a lavorare alla BRT (Belgian Radio and Television) nel 1978, ricoprendo il ruolo di produttore; su Radio 2, una radio di provincia, produsse concerti di Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Meredith Monk, Urban Sax ed altri e condusse un programma chiamato Funky Town insieme a Gust De Meyer (col quale ha registrato un CD sperimentale intitolato For Amusement Only). Mertens ha anche registrato sotto lo pseudonimo di “Soft Verdict” ed è autore del libro American Minimal Music, un lavoro dedicato alla scuola americana della musica minimalista. Nel marzo 1998 Mertens divenne Ambasciatore Culturale delle Fiandre.
Lo Stile di Mertens
Conosciuto principalmente come compositore sin dalla fine degli anni ‘70, tra le sue composizioni più note figura, oltre alla già citata Struggle for Pleasure, anche il brano Maximizing the Audience, composta per il lavoro teatrale The Power of Theatrical Madness di Jan Fabre; tale opera fu presentata per la prima volta nel 1984 a Venezia.
Lo stile di Mertens, nonostante abbia vissuto una continua evoluzione nel corso della sua prolifica produzione, è riconoscibile per il minimalismo, l’ambient e l’avant-garde, pur mantentendo sempre un forte fondo melodico.
La musica di Mertens fu utilizzata nel 1987 nel film di Peter Greenaway “The Belly of an Architect” insieme a quella di Glenn Branca.
